president's message

Behold, all things are made new!

Dr. MossadBy Emad B. Mossad, MD
Texas Children’s Hospital

As a new year begins, it is a good time for all of us to reflect and re-focus.

Our society has strived to embrace our membership and involve all of us through new communications and activities on the website and at our Annual Meetings. As you will read in the newsletter, the CCAS 2016 program on March 31, 2016 at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, will start offering workshops. Click here to view the program.  I encourage you to support this new activity and sign up early for our exciting workshops.

In our field, congenital cardiac anesthesia, we can quickly become isolated and consumed by a demanding practice. We must seek to be engaged with our colleagues locally, nationally and around the world, for the benefit of our patients and our field. I encourage you to be engaged in your own heart center with academic and administrative involvement with other specialties, including cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, radiologists, intensive care physicians as well as other disciplines. Get engaged nationally and globally if the opportunity comes. One such opportunity is the World Congress for Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery set for June 18-23, 2017 in Istanbul, Turkey.  Click here for more information. The CCAS will have (for the first time in a WCPCCS), a clear and identifiable presence. I encourage you to be engaged and plan to attend and participate.

Our specialty offers us the privilege of caring for (often the most) critical pediatric patients in the hospital. This requires significant skill, knowledge, technology and focus. It also places a responsibility to constantly seek improvement and evolution. We should all seek to evolve the field through new knowledge, research and better ways to provide care. Our parent society, SPA, recently awarded three grants through the Young Investigator Research Grant, to fund research in pediatric anesthesia.  Click here for more information.  I encourage you to submit your grant proposal next year, as we work on our own funding through the CCAS to have a similar opportunity for our membership.

I wish you all a warm and wonderful New Year. Embrace our society, and your loved ones. Engage in your hospital, community and nationally; and evolve your practice to always bring better care for our patients.
