Celebrating Change

Dr. MossadBy Emad B. Mossad, MD
Texas Children’s Hospital

As the late great Mahatma Gandhi once stated “You must be the change you wish to see in the world”, if we as individuals, institutions or societies wish to have a better future, we must become the instruments of change for the world around us. We have to challenge the status quo, the way things are done, our comfort zones, to experience progress.

The CCAS is seeking to represent and serve the membership through constantly pursuing change and progress of the society. I want to share with you a few exciting changes we are going to experience in the near future that we hope will help serve the mission of the CCAs and our membership:

CCAS Dolly D. Hansen, MD Educational Fund: Widely known as the “mother of pediatric cardiac anesthesia”, Dr. Dolly Hansen had a distinguished career of over 25 years as the Director of Cardiac Anesthesia at Boston Children’s Hospital. Through her career, she contributed to the science, training and advance in the field of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia. To honor her career, and through a generous starter donation from the Department of Pediatric Anesthesia at Boston Children’s Hospital, and donations form many Pediatric Anesthesia Departments, the CCAS is establishing the Dolly D. Hansen, MD Educational Fund. This will be a great resource for the CCAS to support educational programs, and in the future, starter research grants. The fund is open to donations and support from the membership. Click here to make your donation.

CCAS 2017 Annual Meeting: We are excited to share with you the upcoming program for the CCAS Annual meeting March 2nd, 2017 in Austin, TX.  Click here for the program. This year we will offer for the first time breakfast PBLDs, as well as the workshops and abstract presentations, in an effort to extend the educational resources for the attendees. I encourage you to visit the website, register early and take advantage of these new educational opportunities.

Membership: In an effort to fulfil the mission of the CCAS and enhance inclusion of non-anesthesiologists in the work of our society, we have added a membership category for colleagues from other related disciplines. We have also decreased the membership dues for our international members. I ask you to encourage your colleagues from cardiology, critical care, surgery, perfusion and other disciplines to consider joining our society and contribute to the continued progress of the field. Click here for more information.

This is my last message as CCAS President, and I have been honored to serve our society, and will continue to do so in other capacities. We are excited to welcome our new President Dr. Nina Guzzetta and a new Board of Directors that you helped elect to serve the CCAS and lead us to continued success and change.

I wish you all a prosperous and happy New Year, full of change!
